Bitcoin miners brace for impact as halving goes live
  + stars: | 2024-04-21 | by ( Mackenzie Sigalos | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +17 min
The technical event is relatively simple: Bitcoin miners get paid in bitcoin to validate transactions, and after 210,000 blocks of transactions are computed and added to the main chain, the reward given to the miners securing bitcoin is 'halved.' The aggregate market cap of the 14 U.S.-listed bitcoin miners tracked by JPMorgan analysts declined 28% over the first half of April to $14.2 billion, reaching year-to-date lows. Some have billed the 2024 bitcoin halving as a seminal moment for the mining sector. Marathon, along with other mining firms, has begun diversifying its business model into ancillary operations beyond purely bitcoin mining. Sullivan continued, "Bitcoin mining sites can only be repurposed if they meet the attributes that are required for HPC.

watch nowThe Bitcoin network on Friday evening completed its fourth "halving," reducing the rewards earned by miners to 3.125 bitcoins from 6.25. After the 2012, 2016 and 2020 halvings, the bitcoin price ran up about 93x, 30x and 8x, respectively, from its halving day price to its cycle top. Hash rates are a measure of the computational power used to process transactions on the bitcoin network. "The market so far has seen bitcoin mining stocks as mere BTC proxies, in absence of bitcoin ETFs," said Bernstein analyst Gautam Chhugani. "[The] Bitcoin halving is already partially priced in by the market and we do not expect prices to increase significantly following the halving event," the firm's Marion Laboure said in a note Thursday, adding that it "has been widely anticipated in advance due to the nature of the Bitcoin algorithm."

The bitcoin halving is set to take place in the next few days, which will cut miners' main stream of revenue in half. "We believe a bitcoin price above $60,000-$65,000 means the halving is de-risked for nearly all public miners," Needham analyst John Todaro wrote in a note to clients on Tuesday. It currently costs miners between $36,000 and $52,700 to mine a single bitcoin, Todaro said. Miners offer amplified exposure to bitcoin's price action, which has been more volatile since the launch of bitcoin ETFs introduced more leverage to the market. "That's propelled bitcoin to a threshold where the miners are really generating healthy economics," said Colonnese.

MicroStrategy , which trades as a proxy for the price of bitcoin, surged 20%, while Coinbase advanced 9%. The mining sector got a lift from bitcoin, too, with Marathon Digital and Riot Platforms up 4% and 9%, respectively. Bitcoin had been in correction mode for the past week, after it hit an all-time high of $73,797.68 on March 14. Sam Callahan, lead analyst at bitcoin services firm Swan Bitcoin, said it's likely tied to the messaging coming from the Federal Reserve last week. Despite its pullbacks, bitcoin is on pace to finish March on a winning note.

Bitcoin miners have tumbled since last Thursday, following the launch of spot bitcoin exchange-traded funds . The declines are in part due to the pullback in the bitcoin price, which is down roughly 6% in the same period. In a Monday note to investors, Bernstein also pointed to lower investor appetite for mining stocks as a bitcoin proxy now that ETFs have entered the market. "Just like bitcoin, the next two months offer dip buying opportunity in bitcoin miners," Chhugani said. Bitcoin miners were top performers in 2023, outperforming even bitcoin.

Investors in bitcoin mining stocks are closely watching the price of the cryptocurrency after the Securities and Exchange Commission's move to allow spot bitcoin ETFs became a sell-the-news event. After the ETFs received regulatory approval last week, the flagship currency briefly touched $49,000. As the week went on, however, bitcoin wiped out its earlier gains and notched a modest weekly loss of 0.01%. "If [the bitcoin price] gets to $45,000 or below only the newest, most efficient miners with the … lowest cost power are going to be able to stay online." "We would view any sell-off [in mining stocks] as a buying opportunity, as the ETF does not directly impact mining economics or change competitive dynamics, and we remain bullish on bitcoin and bitcoin miners in 2024," he wrote.

Shares of bitcoin miners - whose profitability improves as bitcoin climbs - including Riot Platforms (RIOT.O), Marathon Digital (MARA.O) and TeraWulf (WULF.O) rose between 1.7% and 4%. "Higher crypto prices should lead to a boost in transaction volume and transaction revenues for Coinbase as we enter 2024," said CFRA Research analyst Michael Elliott. However, Elliott cautioned the crypto exchange faces both legal challenges and new regulations that are likely to take time to play out and will continue to result in volatility for the stock. The ETF approval bets have helped counter latest concerns after Changpeng Zhao, the founder of the world's largest crypto exchange, stepped down and pleaded guilty to breaking U.S. anti-money laundering laws. Among other gainers were U.S. software developer and bitcoin investor Microstrategy (MSTR.O), up nearly 3.5%, and ProShares Bitcoin Strategy ETF (BITO.P), which added 2.1%.

Investors raised their short bets against various solar stocks and electric vehicle charging companies as the stock market breaks down. Hedge funds, in turn, are raising their bets against stocks they feel are particularly vulnerable in a downturn. Short interest in ChargePoint increased 23% to roughly 91 million shares, while short interest in Plug Power rose 9% to 139 million shares. Short interest reached about 32% and 26% of the float in both of those companies, respectively. A handful of aviation stocks also saw a jump in short interest bets, namely Frontier Group and Archer Aviation , which saw short interest rise to 8% and 7%, respectively.

Bitcoin miners are barreling toward the "halving" — a major market-making event that some fear will be a death knell to many in the industry. "We're taking a long-term bet on bitcoin and on the fact that bitcoin mining will survive and will bounce back even stronger." Texas has grown to dominate bitcoin mining partly because of support from local authorities and the operator of the Texas energy grid, ERCOT. Even during the bear market, Texas miners are building out, buying new sites and fresh fleets of hardware. The mining company was spun off from Chinese bitcoin mining giant Bitmain and went public via SPAC earlier this year.
